John Gaglione's Wrestling Exercise of the Week # 3
Eccentric Emphasis Push Ups Movement Category: Upper Body Push Athletic Benefits: Push ups are one of the best upper body exercises for relative strength. By adding a slow eccentric component (slow lowering) the feet and adding chains the push becomes an amazing strength builder as well as a amazing core exercise. Push ups in general are also more shoulder friendly than traditional bench press variations and are ideal for wrestlers in season. The slow lowering phase is a great way to make the exercise harder without adding an additional load.
For all athletes it is crucial they learn to do push ups properly so they don’t hurt their shoulders. If an athlte is unable to perform a push up with proper form they can simply hold the position from both the top and the bottom and hold for time and build strength that way. This is also an excellent “finisher” for a more advanced athlete and will build both mental and physical strength and stability.
