John Gaglione's Wrestling Exercise of the Week # 2

DB  Goblet Squat

Movement Category: Bilateral Knee Dominant

Athletic Benefits:  The goblet squat is the best way to get athletes to squat properly. The goblet squat works the core much more than a traditional squat since the weight is in the front of the body. This position also allows the lifter to get in a much lower position than normal, which will build strength in a greater range of motion and help improve hip mobility.

Exercise Modification Prayer Squat

The prayer squat can be used as a stretch to prepare an athlete for a more advanced squatting variation later in the routine. The prayer squat is also an excellent drill for younger athletes learning the squat since it is a completely unloaded variation. This will strengthen the athletes upper back and legs in an isometric fashion (not moving). This really teaches the athletes to force the knees out and learn proper squat form.
