St. Anthony's Nets Wrestling Crown
By Paul Marino. STAFF WRITER

As the finalists of the Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA league championships lined up at opposite ends of the mat, it looked as if St. Anthony's was about to wrestle Chaminade in a dual match at Kellenberg last night. Both schools were represented by 10 wrestlers each.

The two teams have plenty of history between them. Last Wednesday, St. Anthony's defeated the Flyers for the first time in four years to capture the Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA dual-meet title.

The Friars showed dominance again last night, as six wrestlers won their respective weight classes in helping St. Anthony's capture the team title with 329 points. The title is the first for the Friars since 1995. Three-time defending league champion Chaminade finished second with 304 points and four champions. Holy Trinity was third with 141.5 points and three champions.

All of the champions will compete in the CHSAA state meet Friday at St. Anthony's. The state champions will then advance to the state public schools championships March 5-6 in Syracuse.

"The team has really come along this year," St. Anthony's coach Antoni Walters saidec. "Now we just have to see if they can take it one more step and hopefully we can get some guys that place with the public schools. With this group it is very possible."

"Last year we had a lot of inexperienced kids going upstate," Chaminade coach George Dlugolonski saidec. "But so far, everything we have expected to happen has happened and if all goes well at our state tournament, this could be the best CHSAA group to go to Syracuse in years."

The top wrestler for St. Anthony's was Mike Fiorvanti, who was named Champion of Champions. Fiorvanti was the 160-pound titlist. Other winners for the Friars were Keith Eckert (96), Lucas Magnani (103), Jose Osorio (135), Evan Howard (152) and Joe Minucci (275).
