Babylon Wrestlers Net League VI Title
Nick Fronzo's 7-5 decision over Frank Campos in the 140-pound class gave the Babylon wrestling team momentum in its 35-30 win yesterday over Bayport-Blue Point (7-1). The win enabled the Panthers (8-0) to capture their first League VI dual-meet championship since 1993, coach Rudy Carastro said
Fronzo's decision over Campos trimmed Bayport's lead to 21-13. Babylon took the lead for good at 31-24 when Evan Lackner (171) pinned Kris Citarella in 4:57. In the 189 class, Matt O'Neill decisioned Pete Milanese, 15-6, for Babylon. Lackner, O'Neill and Jon Bartow (145) were all undefeated in league meets this season
Big Win for Brunza. Mark Brunza pinned Ricky Roche with 35 seconds left in their 189-pound bout in East Islip's 40-17 League III win over Riverhead. The score was tied at 5 before the pin occurred. Brunza is ranked fifth in the county at 189, while Roche was ranked first entering the match
Devils Take Title. Five straight wins to end the match helped lead Huntington past Half Hollow Hills West, clinching the League IV title, its 25th in the last 28 years
"We go into every match with the intention of winning," said Blue Devils coach Lou Giani, who is in his 26th season as coach. "We want to win the titles, but we never look ahead."
Robert Nesky started the Huntington winning streak with a decision at the 140-pound weight class. Four bouts and four wins later, Alberto Saravia won by pin to close out the match

Brentwood Claims Crown
By Gregg Sarra. STAFF WRITER
NEWSDAY
Ed Yanis hits the fireman's carry like he hits the books - hard and all the time. Yanis, in only his third varsity match, brawled his way to a 22-13 victory over Ken Schmidt at 135 pounds to give Brentwood a 23-3 lead in a wild, 27-25 victory over Floyd last night before a packed house of 773 fans in Brentwood. The win earned Brentwood (8-0) the League I title outright. It is the school's first title since the Indians captured the League II crown in 1986
"It's never easy," Brentwood coach Bob Panariello said. "We knew this was going to be a close dual."
Yanis, a junior, who doubles up his studies by going to school at night, expects to graduate a year early and go into the Navy aspiring to be a Navy Seal. Last night, he fought his way off his back twice, shook off an injured jaw, and pounded his way to victory. His effort brought the house down as he hit Schmidt with the fireman's carry three times in the third period to build a large lead. It was a critical bout for Brentwood. "I can hit that move anytime I want," an ecstatic Yanis said through an ice bag that covered his face. "I just have to open up and feel comfortable. No one can stop it."
As expected, Brentwood took a 19-0 lead as Pat Flynn (103) and defending county champion Hector Toro turned in first-period pins and teammate Starlin Jiminez won by major decision, 14-5
Brentwood seventh-grader Angel Garced, in only his second varsity match, outlasted Ari DeOliveira, 17-14, at 125 pounds
"That was a key win for them at 125 pounds," Floyd coach Terry Phelan said. "But I have to say that I'm very pleased with the way we came back. Our kids showed great character in the other team's building in front of a packed house."
Ater the Yanis win, things got interesting. Floyd's John Cicio moved up to 140 pounds and beat highly-regarded Casey Beach, 14-4, to get the Colonials rolling. And then Adam DeOliveira (145), Ryan Maurer (152) and Chris Esposito (160) reeled off three straight one-point decisions to get the Colonials within 23-16
Maurer moved up three weights to meet county runner-up Moses Gonzalez and earned an exciting, 7-6 win. "Right there, I thought we were going to win," Floyd's 215-pounder, Joel Barone, said. "We had so much momentum and a great chance to beat a great team."
Brentwood's Tony Guzman survived a 22-14 bout with Ben Caiaccia at 171 pounds, forcing Floyd to pin in the final two bouts to win the dual
"We needed one guy in the final two weights to stay off his back and we're the champs," Panariello said
And Luis Escobar did just that. He wrestled hard against Joe Randazzo, losing a 6-3 decision at 189 pounds, but still helped the Indians clinch the school's first title in 13 years. Floyd's Joel Barone earned the 100th win of his career with a pin in 2:35 over Tom Baldwin, giving the Colonials six wins in the final seven bouts but not enough to catch Brentwood
"This was a special win," Panariello said. "It's a great group of kids who deserved nothing less."

When North Babylon's Bobby Alpi (145) pinned John Eddington in 2:22, it meant Riverhead would have to pin out to force a tie in a match to decide the League III regular-season title. Riverhead (5-1) followed with two consecutive pins before North Babylon forfeited 171, 189, leaving it up to Joe Albino not to get pinned at 215. He didn't and North Babylon (6-0) got the win, 33-31. "I basically told him, do what you got to do, just keep the shoulders off the mat," North Babylon coach Brian Uvena said

S-WR Goes To Mat vs. Harborfields
By Paul Marino. STAFF WRITER
It is not often that a wrestler walks off the mat feeling triumphant after losing a match in his team's most important dual meet of the season. But Shoreham-Wading River's 215-pound Greg Vereb was all smiles after his loss Friday night, and so was his team
Vereb refused to get pinned by Harborfields' Corey Gribbin, and did not give up a point in the final 1:20 of a 9-2 loss that meant a 34-33 victory over the host Tornadoes in a League V match. If Gribben had managed another point against Vereb, it would have meant four more team points for Harborfields, and the match would have ended in a tie. That would have given Harborfields (6-1) sole possession of its first League V championship since 1983
Now, Shoreham (5-1) can tie for the championship - that would make it seven in the last eight years - with a win against Rocky Point in its final league match next week
"This is one of those times you lose but you don't really care," Vereb said. "I have always been a team player and tonight, I feel good because I did what I had to do to help my team win."
"We haven't accomplished what we want yet," Shoreham head coach Paul Jendrewski said. "But this is an incredible win, probably our best of the season. If we can carry this into the next match, we have a good shot at another title. I would rather share it than lose."
The most exciting match of the night was the first. Shoreham 103-pounder Dan Miracola dominated Keith Greene and gained a 15-1 lead with 1:04 remaining in the final period. Miracola was trying for a technical fall and six team points for Shoreham and let Greene up so he could try for a takedown to end the match. Instead, Greene electrified his team and the crowd of 350 when he caught Miracola off balance and rolled him into a spladle (combination sprawl and cradle) for a pin with seven seconds remaining
"That was a geat win for Greene," Harborfields coach Ralph Foreman said. "Miracola has been terrific for them. I thought that might act like a spark for us."
It did. The Tornadoes won three of the next five matches, all by pin, to take a 24-12 lead. But five staight wins by Shoreham, including consecutive pins by unbeaten, 145-pound Jesse Jantzen over Steve Mally (1:37), and 152-pound Sean Bryan over Todd Faustin (5:20), gave Shoreham a 34-24 lead with just two matches remaining. Mally, who came in unbeaten (19-0), was overmatched by Jantzen, a junior who already has won four county and two state championships and is 25-0 this season
As for Vereb, his team is still his top priority and he hopes he can contribute again next week
"I want to win my match against Rocky Point," he said. "But if I win and the team loses, that doesn't feel so good. I'd rather feel the way I do tonight."

Sachem 33, William Floyd 25 January 27, 1999
It has been a difficult season for Sachem, but it took a turn for the better late Wednesday night when the Flaming Arrows upset previously unbeaten Floyd, 33-25, in a League I dual meet
Sachem (2-5) swept the first five bouts and took an 18-0 lead before Floyd fought back to win five of the next six bouts to pull within 24-21. But the Flaming Arrows won two of the final three to pull out the victory
William Floyd (4-1) trailed the dual, 27-21, heading into the 215-pound bout and needed Joel Barone to pin Dominic Iannucci to tie the team score. Barone came away with an 18-7 decision - good enough for four team points. The 275-pound bout was counted in the team score only after the coaches saw that it wouldn't affect the outcome of the final score

Brentwood Turns Back Smithtown
Brentwood and Smithtown wrestled as if there were no tomorrow. Four
overtime matches, three matches decided by less than two points. When it
was over, Brentwood topped Smithtown, 33-18, in a League I meet Friday
night.
"It was intense," Smithtown coach Pat Smith said.
That intensity was perfectly captured at the152-pound class, where
Smithtown's Lane Chereskin, ranked third in Suffolk, rallied from a 5-0
defecit to decision second-ranked Moses Gonzales, 7-6. At 119, defending
county champ Hector Torro of Brentwood defeated Greg Licata, 5-3.

Huntington Wins Stunner
By Gregg Sarra. STAFF WRITER
Lou Giani acted Friday night like the cat who ate the canary. Giani,
Long Island's winningest dual-meet wrestling coach with 359 wins,
smirked after the Blue Devils' surprising 31-29 victory over Hauppauge
in a pivotal League IV match.
Huntington had just put forth a near-perfect performance to best
Hauppauge, one of the top teams in the state. The Blue Devils led 31-26
going into the final bout and only needed heavyweight Alberto Saravia
not to get himself pinned.
"I told him to stay off his back," Giani said. "Move away from him,
wrestle smart and just don't get pinned."
Saravia didn't as Hauppauge's Ben Bonaventura won, 5-2.
"I would say that is one of the finest overall team performances I
have ever coached," Giani said. "We graduated eight seniors, including
six county placewinners, and I guess no one expected us to be in this
position with such a young team."
Huntington (4-0) is always a contender. But Hauppauge was the team to
beat. Hauppauge had defending state champion Michael Messina and a
lineup that boasted a ton of talent.
Not even a shocking loss at 103 pounds could prevent the Blue Devils
from pulling off the upset. The roar of the crowd of 641 quieted when
Huntington's Stephon Sair, the county's top-ranked wrestler at 103
pounds, lost the opening bout. Dan Song, a 96-pounder, pinned Sair in
5:16 to get Hauppauge off to a 6-0 start.
"I thought we were done right there," Giani said. "That wasn't
supposed to happen. I thought we were cooked."
Instead, Huntington reeled off seven wins in the next nine bouts for a
31-16 lead. Freshman Steve Palacios pinned Phil Iannello in 42 seconds
at 112 pounds and Paul Zarcone pinned Paul D'Amelio in 2:47 at 119 for a
12-6 lead.
After Justin Iannello got the Eagles within 12-10 with a 10-2 decision
over Rhamaad Spann at 125 pounds, Huntington's middleweights took over,
winning four of the next five bouts.
"I'm totally disgusted with the way we wrestled," Hauppauge coach
Chris Messina said. "We had notes and a scouting report on their kids'
tendencies and we didn't follow the script. We told our kids what to
stay away from and we didn't do it."
The crushing blow came at 145 pounds, where Hauppauge's
highly-regarded Ricky Ress was pinned in 5:30 by senior John Lentini.
"I caught him with a headlock and put him to his back," Lentini said.
"I thought we were evenly matched and I went out there to prove that."
It was tied at 2 with 38 seconds left in the third period when
Lentini put Ress onto his back for a wild and unexpected win to give
the Blue Devils a 24-16 edge.
"That should have never happened," Messina said. "It was just another
mistake we made. Take nothing away from Huntington, they're a fine team
and well coached. But we blew it. They got away with this one."
And Giani knew it - but he wasn't saying.

Close Call for Longwood. Longwood coach Scott Conlon knew it would
be a close wrestling match against Floyd.
It was, and then some. Joel Barone's pin at heavyweight proved to be
the difference as Floyd defeated Longwood, 33-27, in a Suffolk I
contest.
"[Floyd] coach [Terry] Phelan has a tough team," Conlon said. "There
was some great wrestling out there."
With his team down 27-21, Longwood's Dan Sable pinned Joe Randazzo
in 4:10 in a bout featuring two of the top 189-pounders in the county to
tie the score at 27 heading into the heavyweight bout.
Longwood's Adam Czachor defeated John Cicio 9-6 at 130 in another
close match.

Islip Upends Shoreham
Gregg Sarra
The wrestling in League V gets more interesting with each dual meet.Islip, Shoreham-Wading River, Harborfields and Mt. Sinai were allthought to be contenders for the league title. Last night, Islip continued to upend the other highly-regarded teams in its march to a league championship
Senior heavyweight Joe Goodman turned a 3-2 lead into a pin at 4:37 to lift Islip past previously unbeaten Shoreham-Wading River, 39-31, before 733 fans in Islip
The victory snapped Shoreham's 37-match unbeaten streak, which spanned five years. "The place was going crazy," Islip coach Joe Patrovich said. "This has got to be the biggest win of the season." Islip (6-1, 4-0) wiped out a 9-0 deficit with three consecutive pins by sophomore Mike Patrovich (119), junior Gary Tiamsic (125) and juniorJoe Cerniglia (130). The key win for the Bucs came at 145 pounds when junior Joe Vitale decisioned defending league champion Sean Bryan, 8-4
"We really have a balanced league," Patrovich said. "When you're talking about Rocky Point being beaten a few times, it opens your eyes to see that the league is very tough. This was an exciting win."
Shoreham's Jesse Jantzen, the four-time defending county champion and two-time state champion, could only sit and watch as Islip forfeited the152-pound class
Islip upended Mt. Sinai, 36-33, in the season opener and travels to upstart Harborfields tomorrow at 4 p.m. for another major test. "It'll be another wild one against Harborfields," Patrovich said. "They have a very good lineup."

Ingenito Sparks NB Win
By Gregg Sarra. STAFF WRITER
NEWSDAY
North Babylon wrestler Mike Ingenito is not just any camper during the summer. He's the ultimate camper. Some kids go to day camp and others to a sports campinned Ingenito goes to wrestling camp - 28 days of it
Ingenito attended J. Robinson's Intensive Wrestling Camp in Minnesota for 28 days in July and the improvement shows. His technical skills are impeccable and opposing wrestlers find his style unbeatable
Ingenito (16-0), the defending county champion at 112 pounds, recorded his seventh technical fall of the season in 4:00 over Mike Albano at 125 pounds and led North Babylon to a 37-27 victory over East Islip on Friday in a League III dual meet
"Let's get this straight," Ingenito saidec. "I didn't go to camp because I loved it. I went again this year because I don't want to settle for one county title. I want to defend my title and win the states. Going to camp needed to be done to reach the next level."
North Babylon coach Brian Uvena said Ingenito's dedication is what separates him from most wrestlers. Said Uvena, "Mike's a kid who's paid the price to be a winner. He has all the guts and toughness. It doesn't matter when I open the weight room because he's in there - it could be at night, the off-season, in-season, the morning - he's always looking for that edge."
Ingenito seems to have found it. He has been a steady part of the North Babylon program since the fourth grade when he started with the local KID wrestling program. Eariler this season, he earned a big victory by blanking defending county champ Hector Toro of Brentwood, 8-0, in a 119-pound match at the North Babylon Tournament. He has 85 wins in his four-year varsity career and figures he can hit the century plateau with a victory in the county final
"The 100th win could come in the final as long as I continue to stay on track," Ingenito saidec. "It's never easy that's why I stay on top of my game."
Friday, Ingenito weighed in at 119 pounds and was bumped to 125 pounds by Uvena. Why?
"Because I knew he could handle the higher weight and set the tone for the rest of the dual," Uvena saidec. "We needed a bunch of kids to move up a weight class to win this one."
Uvena's coaching decision to alter his lineup was recommended by assistant coach Anthony Sparacio and worked to the Bulldogs' benefit. After Ingenito's win, Uvena bumped up Mike Dattoma (130), Frank Rivera (135), Bill Turano (140) and Sean Fehn (145). All four came away with imprssive wins, with Fehn sealing the victory as North Babylon took a 34-3 leadec
Rafael Rodriguez ended East Islip's victory drought with a pin in 1:27 at 160 pounds over Mike Rocchio. The Redmen finished the meet with three first-period pins in the final four weights
"We were outwrestled in the lower weights and Brian made the right moves in his lineup," East Islip coach Guy Leggio saidec. "We're young and we'll learn."
Indeedec. East Islip (6-2) has a starting lineup with all underclassmen
North Babylon (4-0) has a lineup that includes three seniors and a dedicated champion
