Section XI - League 1 Tournament
at Longwood HS
February 14, 1998

As expected, Longwood won its third straight Suffolk League I wrestling tournament yesterday. The Lions finished with 209 1/2 points, 13 1/2 more than second-place Sachem. Brentwood (171 1/2) was third.

Jason Finnerty of Longwood, the top seed at 112, wrestled with the flu, yet still managed to win his final and will be the top seed in the county tournament next weekend.

Joe Patrovic of Connetquot avenged an early-season loss to George Sable of Longwood, winning 6-4 in overtime in the 160-pound final. Despite a slam by Patrovich, Sable elected to continue the match despite suffering a concussion, according to Longwood coach Scott Conlon.

"If he [Sable] would have stayed down, he would have got the win, but he didn't want to win like that," Conlon said. A win would have given Sable a high seed in the tournament. Instead, he will have to be drawn, Conlon said.

Patrovic was named the tournament's most outstanding wrestler.

at Northport HS

Northport Takes Title

Bellport hadn't lost a Suffolk League II wrestling match in two years. Northport had never won the league tournament in the school's history.

Northport decided it was time for a change.

Top-seeded Chris Corrigan (145) of Northport pinned highly touted Justin Bell of Lindenhurst in 1:20 as the Tigers (183 points) finished 7 1/2 points ahead of second-place Bellport at yesterday's League II tournament. Bay Shore was third with 153 1/2 points.

Other standouts for Northport included Jake Stock, who defeated Tom Millen of Whitman, 14-1, at 135 pounds. Chris Felicetta (125) of Bellport was named most outstanding wrestler.
