#12 HOFSTRA FALLS AT #10 PENN STATE, 28-11

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Despite a 15-0 tech fall victory by sophomore Lou Ruggirello at 133 pounds, the #12 Hofstra Pride wrestling team dropped a 28-11 decision to #10 Penn State before 1,965 fans at the Rec Hall Saturday afternoon. The loss drops Hofstra's record to 0-2 this season while the Nittany Lions improved to 2-0. The Pride, who defeated the Nittany Lions in Hempstead last December, captured just three of the 10 matches Saturday afternoon.

Beginning the match at 197 pounds, Penn State’s second-ranked senior Phil Davis (2-0) avenged a loss to Hofstra’s Chris Weidman last season by posting a 12-1 major decision over sixth-ranked Pride senior Joe Rovelli (1-1) for a 4-0 lead in the contest. Sophomore Stefan Tighe (2-0) pinned Hofstra junior James Guerin (0-2) in 5:19 of the heavyweight match to boost the lead to 10-0. In a battle of top 10-ranked wrestlers at 125 pounds, 10th-ranked Penn State senior Mark McKnight (2-0) tallied all three of his points in the second period and held on to defeat Hofstra’s seventh-ranked senior Dave Tomasette (1-1), 3-2, as the Nittany Lions took a 13-0 lead.

The Pride got on the board at 133 as fourth-ranked sophomore Lou Ruggirello (2-0) notched a 15-0 tech fall victory over Penn State freshman Mike Eagen (0-2). Ruggirello, who will be going to Eugene, Oregon on Monday to compete in the NWCA All-Star Classic, jumped out to a 10-0 lead after one period before posting the victory at 4:04 of the match. In another top 10-match-up at 141 pounds, Hofstra’s second-ranked senior Charles Griffin (1-1) dropped a 6-1 decision to seventh-ranked Nittany Lion junior Jake Strayer (2-0). Griffin will also go to Oregon on Monday to compete in the NWCA All-Star Classic. Strayer’s win gave Penn State a 16-5 lead at the intermission.

Bubba Jenkins, the Nittany Lions’ seventh-ranked sophomore, improved to 2-0 on the season with a 5-2 victory over Hofstra sophomore Mitch Smith (0-2) at 149 pounds. Sophomore Dan Vallimont (2-0), ranked 12th at 157 pounds, decisioned Pride sophomore Jonny Bonilla-Bowman, 6-3, as Penn State opened up a 22-5 advantage. Pride freshman Ryan Patrovich (1-1) snapped the PSU three-match winning streak with a 3-1 over 16th-ranked sophomore Dave Rella (1-1) at 165 pounds to cut the deficit to 22-8. Hofstra junior Alton Lucas (2-0) made it two-in-a-row with a 12-7 decision over sophomore David Erwin at 174 pounds to inch closer at 22-11. In the final match of the day Penn State’s 20th-ranked junior Phil Bomberger improved to 2-0 with a win by fall over Pride freshman Jeff Siciliano (0-2) in 1:52.

The Pride will return to action next Saturday, November 24th when they will face Bloomsburg, Oklahoma State, and Bucknell at the Brute/Journeyman Northeast Duals at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York.
