Junior heavyweight Ty Watterson recorded a major decision victory in the final match of the night to give the Beavers of Oregon State (1-0) an 18-17 victory over #18 Hofstra (0-1-1) Thursday night at the Hofstra Arena.

After Hofstra sophomore Dave Tomasette opened the match at 125 with a 10-5 victory over Beaver junior Eric Stevenson, Oregon State won the next four matches to take a 14-6 lead. OSU junior Bobby Pfennigs posted a 15-0 tech fall victory over freshman Robbie Deibert in 3:41 at 133 to give the Beavers a 5-3 lead. Sophomore Kyle Larson allowed just two escapes on the way to a 7-2 victory over junior John Manarte at 141 pounds to boost the OSU lead to 8-3. At 149, OSU senior Orlando Perez took advantage of 3:48 of riding time to edge Pride freshman Mike Martini 5-4. Senior Tony Hook posted a third period escape to edge #17 Hofstra junior James Strouse 3-2 and give the Beavers a 14-3 lead.

But Hofstra rallied with four consecutive victories as senior Chris Vondruska recorded a takedown in sudden victory for a 3-1 win at 165 pounds over senior Anthony Weber. At 174, ninth-ranked Hofstra senior Mike Patrovich dominated 20^th-ranked OSU junior Jeremy Larson 11-3 for a major decision as the Pride closed to within four at 14-10. Number 14 junior Joe Rovelli tied the match for Hofstra at 184 pounds with a 9-0 major decision over freshman Kyle Bressler. Junior Chris Weidman, a two-time junior college All-American, gave the Pride a 17-14 lead with an 8-3 decision over senior Dan Pitsch at 197 pounds setting up the match finale.

Watterson stymied the two-time junior college All-American Andriac, riding him for 3:42 and posting a 13-0 major win for the 18-17 team victory. The Pride will compete at the East Stroudsburg Open this weekend while Oregon State goes to upstate New York to wrestle in the Cornell University Invitational.
