Gettysburg drops a pair at Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Senior Mike Russo (Sewell, NJ/Peddie School) won both of his 141-pound matches, but Gettysburg dropped a pair of wrestling matches in a tri-match at Kutztown with King’s on Saturday.

The Bullets (0-2) were knocked off by King’s College 31-10 before falling to Kutztown, 44-6.

Daniel Donnelly (Garden City, NY/Garden City) (181) won his match against Azaria Numerato as the only other Gettysburg victory in the Kutztown match 7-6 in sudden victory.

Tom Fives (Pittsburgh, PA/The Hill School) notched a 10-8 decision against Jim Lewis from King’s College (1-1) at 149, and Mike Pattanite (Tabernacle, NJ/Holy Cross) defeated the Monarchs’ Jim Bishop 8-6 in the heavyweight division.

Drew Duhaut and Jason Reilly recorded pins for King’s in the match. Duhaut scored a pin at 157 over Josh Kaplan (Canton, CT/Canton) in 47 seconds, and Reilly’s pin of Justin Perinotti (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) at 197 came just 57 seconds into the bout.

After the Monarchs jumped out to a 9-0 lead with a Mitch Marcks technical fall in the opening match at 125 and a Jeremy Ackerman major decision at 133, Russo scored a major decision in his match against Matt Flannery 12-4 to bring the Bullets to within 9-4. Fives’ decision in the next bout pulled the match to within 9-7, but King’s won the next five weight classes to wrap up the win.

In the Kutztown match, Vinny Rufo won the 125-pound bout by injury default and Sam Julian tallied an 11-2 major decision to give the Golden Bears a 10-0 lead. Russo pulled the match to 10-3 with a 9-4 win over Mark Rusak, but Kutztown (2-1) ran the board until Donnelly’s overtime win at 184 to take the match.

Craig Kunsman, Christian Luciano, Bret Wade, and Andrew Freas all tallied pins for Kutztown in the match. Kunsman pinned Fives in 4:46 at 149, while Wade recorded his fall at 5:35 over Perinotti in the 197-pound weight class. Luciano notched a 13-second pin at 174 over Mike Denholtz (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington). Freas’s pin came at 2:04 over Pattanite in the heavyweight class.

Luciano also recorded a 12-second pin over King’s Zach Dietrich to lead the Golden Bears to a 32-16 victory in the other match on the day.
