Oswego State Wrestlers Fall to Cortland in Showdown of
Ranked Teams January 28, 2004 Oswego, NY In a battle of nationally-ranked wrestling programs, visiting Cortland dealt Oswego State a 26-14 defeat on Wednesday, January 28th at Laker Hall. The Lakers (5-8) entered the dual meet ranked 29th in the latest Brute - Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll, while the Red Dragons (15-7) are ranked 16th. Cortland grabbed the first lead of the match as Jason Chase (Rush) scored a 10-0 win over Max Zimmermann (Redfield) at 141 pounds for a 4-0 team lead. Oswego State trimmed that deficit to a point when Dane LaPlante (Carthage) earned three team points with a 4-3 triumph at 149 edging Jaret Misener (Schoharie). The teams traded wins over the next two weight classes with Brent Rider (Tioga) winning for the Red Dragons at 157 pounds with a 24-9 technical fall win. At 165, Oswego State’s Frank Petrucci (Suffern), who is ranked seventh nationally in his weight class, recorded a 7-3 decision cutting the Cortland advantage to 9-6. The Red Dragons then won the next three weight classes before Oswego State got back on the board at 285 pounds. Jeremy Calkins (Schuyler Falls) edged Chris Locke (Bainbridge) 3-0. The final two bouts featured two highly ranked wrestlers. At 125 pounds, third-ranked Jason Peck (Montgomery) of Cortland scored a 3-0 decision versus Oswego State’s John Spinner (Malone), while at 133 Tenkoran Agyeman (Bronx) remained undefeated on the season for the Lakers with a 22-4 technical fall in 6:02 over Eddie Ortiz (New Rochelle). Agyeman, who last weekend became the first Oswego State wrestler in 22 years to win a state title, is ranked fourth in his weight class and is now a perfect 30-0 on the season. Oswego State returns to the mat on Saturday, February 7th hosting the New York/New Jersey Dual in conjunction with Laker Days. Wrestling begins at noon. Cortland
