HEMPSTEAD, New York – The 14th-ranked
Pride of Hofstra won eight of 10 matches to post a 28-9 Colonial Athletic
Association victory over the Boston University Terriers Thursday night at
Hofstra Arena. Hofstra improves to 2-1 on the season, 1-0 in CAA while Boston
University falls to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the CAA. Hofstra extended its
conference match winning streak to 27 dating back to the 1998-99 season.
Hofstra junior Chris Stretkowicz (pictured
above) had the biggest victory of the night at 197 pounds, blanking freshman
John DaCruz to win by tech fall at 3:49 of the match. The Pride dropped the last
two matches of the night, at 133 by forfeit and at 141 as BU junior Joey Rivera
defeated freshman John Manarte, 8-2.
In the most exciting match of the night, at
heavyweight, Hofstra sophomore Dan Garay defeated Terrier junior Courtney
Howard, 7-5, in sudden victory overtime. Garay took a 4-3 lead on a takedown
with 31 seconds remaining in regulation. But Howard escaped to tie the match and
send it into overtime. After a scoreless first overtime, each wrestler recorded
an escape in each of the following 30-second overtime periods sending the match
to a final sudden victory period. Garay posted a takedown with 21 seconds
remaining to grab the victory.
In one of the more competitive matches of the night,
Hofstra senior Ralph Everett, ranked 11th in the country and first in
the CAA at 165, recorded a takedown with 20 seconds remaining in regulation to
defeat senior Leighton Brady, ranked 15th nationally and second in
the CAA, 3-1.
